Solar Carport To Help Wicklow County Council Meet Renewable Energy Targets/Goals

Solar Carport

Irelands first 300kWp solar carport installed by Enerpower will see Wicklow Co. Co. generate 265,800 kWh of electricity whilst reducing their carbon emissions by 188 tons per annum.
Enerpower completed another record-breaking installation at the Wicklow facility with the construction of Ireland’s first solar carport.
Climate Change is a prominent factor of today’s society and Wicklow Co. Co took measures to change and reduce their impact during their first meeting with Enerpower. Wicklow County Council outlined the sustainability targets they were working towards. 17 sustainability goals were set for Wicklow County Council. The implementation of these sustainability goals is to achieve a sustainable future in line with the Government 2030 targets.

Wicklow had been severely affected by several factors over the last number of years with coastal erosions on coastlines such as Brittas Bay and The Murrough, serve flooding across all towns, and €190,000 spent on repairs of Wicklow Swimming pool and leisure centre due to stormy conditions and high winds. Wicklow has invested in renewable energy in hopes of slowing down and reducing the severity of these events.

Wicklow County Council identified energy efficiency as a key objective as part of their aim to reduce their carbon footprint while keeping in line with the national targets. Wicklow County Council will also benefit financially as this carport will reduce any long-term energy costs.
This innovative project, the largest carport project in Ireland covering 107 car park spaces. All energy generated by this carport will be consumed by Wicklow County Council facility with no export to the national grid.

Wicklow County Council Chief Executive Officer, Frank Curran, stated: “The installation of the solar panel carports at County Buildings in Wicklow is a great example of using existing sites, such as car parks, to generate renewable energy and assist in achieving Climate Change targets.”
Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Shay Cullen, added “I’m delighted to see large innovative projects like the solar carport taking shape, it is one of our key energy efficiency projects for 2021”

Wicklow County Council are delivering on their sustainability goals and supporting communities in building a more sustainable future at a local level.
